Parish Nurse Ministry

Prairie Faith Shared Ministry has developed a new ministry to meet the needs of our congregations and community—The Parish Nurse Ministry. The goals of an PNM is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; the prevention of illness and injury; and the alleviation of suffering in the context of the values, beliefs and practices of the faith community. The PNM uses the nursing process to address the spiritual, physical, mental, and social health of the parishioner/healthcare consumer.

The Parish Nurse Ministry is there to provide for the health needs in cooperation with other health professionals. It is important for all to understand that a PNM does not replace any existing service or support group or agency. We are not their competition. Our role is referral and filling in the gaps. Such as:

©      Understand your diagnosis and your doctor’s plan for your health care.

©      Understand how your medications work and possible side effects.

©      Set up your medications in a medication box.

©      Prepare for your doctor’s appointment—or come along with you as an extra set of ears.

©      Provide support and provide education about healthy lifestyle changes of eating more nutritious food and increasing physical activity.

©      Locate community resources when you need some extra help.

©      Check your blood pressure and provide basic nursing assessment if you have concerns.

A parish nurse does NOT:

©      Replace home health or public health nursing care.

©      Replace existing community resources.

©      Replace pastoral care.

©      Provide invasive nursing actions or procedures.

©      Give medical advice or administer medications.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

"Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing,

symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.

They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,

mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to

fly above their troubles..."

Do you like to crochet, knit, or sew? Would you like to share your gift? The Parish Nurse Ministry is starting a Prayer Shawl Program. Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, Mantles, lap robes, or blankets, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need. Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God!

Shawls can be used for: undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; prayer or meditation; during an illness and recovery; ministering to others...there are endless possibilities!

If you would like  like information or to participate, please call the office at 785-743-2005.

Webster’s dictionary defines Theology as “the study of religious faith, practice and experience; especially the study of God and Gods relation to the world.” Coffee; well you know what that is.

What if we talked about God and our faith and how we experience these things in our world? What if we did that over coffee? On Fridays some of us will gather at 10:00 a.m. at The Studio downtown WaKeeney to have coffee and to talk about various aspects of faith and living out that faith in our culture. Articles from various sources will provide the spark, but only the Holy Spirit knows where it will go from there. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join in the conversation.
