The first St. John church was dedicated in the fall of 1898. The three acres of ground north of Ellis had been purchased from the Union Pacific Railroad Co. for $59.00. In 1911 the parsonage was constructed and was followed by the construction of the school house in 1915. From that time many changes, improvements and updates have been realized, including a new church building, the addition of bathrooms, a church office, and recently the addition of an elevator.
Throughout their history there have been droughts, hail storms, fires, depressions, wars, sand, and dirt storms. However, through it all their church building has stood proudly as a symbol of strength and a landmark for the many people who travel past it every day. A building where many people have spent some of the most significant moments of their lives: marriages, funerals, baptisms, confirmations, and many hours worshiping the God whose love through time has sustained, comforted, blessed, motivated, and uplifted five generations of people.
